You will need a shallow ovenproof pie dish

Preheat the oven to 180°C

Ingredients

For the apples:

  • 5 eating apples (or you can use any)
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

For the crumble:

  • 100g plain flour
  • 75g Dromona butter
  • 50g rolled oats
  • 100g sugar (Jill prefers a mixture of Demerara and caster but either will be fine)
  • Sprinkle of cold water

How It’s Done:

  1. Peel and core the apples and roughly chop into equal sized chunks
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and place the apple pieces into the pan along with the sugar and 1 tbsp water. Give it a stir, cover the pan with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes. Stir and then cover again and cook until the apples are really soft. You can add more sugar if the apples are too tart
  3. Transfer the stewed apples to a shallow ovenproof pie dish
  4. In a large bowl, rub the flour and butter together with your fingertips (it’s better if your hands are cold), until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs
  5. Stir in the oats and the sugar and combine, I like to add a few sprinkles of cold water and rub through to create a slightly stickier mixture
  6. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the cooked apples in the pie dish. Transfer to the oven and bake for around 30 minutes or until crisp and golden-brown on top
  7. Serve with custard and/or ice cream and enjoy!
